The Shunning - Hallmark Channel Movie

MOVIE REVIEW

The Shunning

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: April 16, 2011

CAST:

Danielle Panabaker ... Katie Lapp
Sandra Van Natta ... Rebecca Lapp
Bill Oberst ... Samuel Lapp
Sherry Stringfield ... Laura Mayfield-Bennett
Burgess Jenkins ... Bishop John Beiler
Nancy Saunders ... Ella Mae Zook
Jason Loughlin ... Benjamin Lapp

PLOT:

from Hallmark Press Release:

A young Amish girl struggles with her identity as she prepares for an arranged marriage with the town’s bishop. Then, she is stunned to find out she was adopted and her birth mother wants to be reunited with her. As she wonders what could have been and starts separating herself from her community’s strict religious customs, the town turns their backs on her just when she needs them the most.

Based on the best-selling book by Beverly Lewis. Michael Landon, Jr. and Brian Byrd are the executive producers for Lightworks Pictures.

Movie Review:

(Contains Spoilers!)

This movie was fairly slow moving. I felt sometimes that those who read the book knew more of what was going on than what was revealed within the movie. For instance, there were sequences where Katie went back in time in her memory of time she spent with another young man who was from a different Amish Community. I felt many unanswered questions there - how did they meet - how did they get together in secret? He appears to be Katie's first love. We eventually learn, later on, that he has died.

The Amish speaking was often times hard to understand. I know they were trying to be authentic to the Amish way of speaking, but it was difficult to make out, at times... especially if there was loud background music. I also noticed Katie's Amish father wearing a wedding band, when it is not acceptable for the Amish to wear jewelry. I found it to be very noticeable - a huge mistake when trying to be authentically Amish.

As day to day life goes by, Katie realizes there is some secret everyone is hiding from her. She feels different than the others in her Amish Community. She wants to sing other music, than what is in their Hymn books, but that is forbidden. She also loves to play the guitar, but that, too, is forbidden. Her father, eventually breaks her guitar in a rage of anger.

Katie's Amish parents eventually admit to her that they are not her birth parents and that her real mother has come looking for her and that she is
dying.

About to be married to an Amish man, Katie realizes she cannot go through with it. She rushes out of the church and the Amish men leaders decide that her punishment is to be shunned.

From then on, no one speaks or does anything with her. Katie gives her dowry back to her father. Eventually, her Mother and a neighbor lady do speak with her... after that, Katie decides to leave and go see her birth mother.

At the bus station, Katie's father showed up. He laid the money, her dowry, in the seat next to her. Before leaving, Katie rushed back and hugged him. Then, she got on the bus ... and they showed the bus driving off down the road... into the distance. That was the end. We did not see anything beyond that. I couldn't believe we didn't see her meet her Mother. The movie felt sad and incomplete, to me.

I felt, in a way, that the real shunning was what Katie did to her Amish family... leaving them and turning her back on her Amish upbringing.

MOVIE REVIEW

Mystery Girl

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: 2011

CAST:

Brigid Brannagh ... Charley Anderson
Sean Patrick Flanery ... Ben McCauley
Christine Scott Bennett ... Chloe

PLOT:

Ben McCauley e-mails Chloe, the beautiful, "mystery girl" who keeps crossing his path, but the message goes to single mother Charley Anderson by mistake. Ben begins dating Chloe, but she never quite lives up to the e-mail relationship and anonymous friendship he develops with Chloe's co-worker, Charley. Once Ben discovers his mishap, the identity of his true mystery girl is revealed.

Just out of a rocky relationship, Ben moves slowly with the intimidating Chloe (Christine Scott Bennett, "Funny or Die") and decides to e-mail her a hello. When he overhears the incorrect address, instead he e-mails Charley Anderson (Brannagh), a single, attractive mom who works at the same company - a sports entertainment company -- as Chloe. Ben and Charley soon develop a great relationship online. Then, through Chloe, they become friends in-person. Ben even helps Charley's 7-year-old son with baseball. Meanwhile, Chloe never quite lives up to the e-mail relationship and anonymous friendship he develops with Charley. But it isn't until Charley receives a job offer and is about to leave the state that Ben realizes who he's truly in love with.

Rock the House - Hallmark Channel Movie

MOVIE REVIEW

Rock the House

Network: Hallmark Channel

Original Air Date: June 18, 2011

CAST:

Jack Coleman ... Max Peterson
Cassi Thomson ... Karen Peterson
Andy Milder ... Ronny
Clare Carey ... Jesse
Helen Slater ... Diane

PLOT:

from Hallmark Channel:

Jack Coleman ("Heroes") has been cast to star in "Rock the House," a Hallmark Channel Original Movie about a strained father-daughter relationship that is improved dramatically through the magic of rock n' roll when the dad begins to realize that making a living doesn't have to mean missing out on what really matters.

Dave Peterson (Coleman) is a successful and handsome career-driven attorney who barely spends time with his teenage daughter, Karen (Cassi Thomson, "Big Love"). Their routine regularly consists of Dave choosing work over spending time with her, and Karen retreating into her journal or iPod.

When Dave opens up his 25th high school reunion invitation to see photos of himself -- a person he no longer resembles -- he begins reconnecting with old friends, including members of his old high school band, The Groaners. Suddenly Dave begins to find ways to spend more time with Karen, and, for the first time, he puts his career on hold. But just days before Karen's prom, when the prom organizing committee finds out that they are without a band for the big night, Karen decides to ask her father to get The Groaners on stage. It may cost him his big promotion so Dave has to decide once and for all how he should be prioritizing his time.

Movie Review:

This is a cute Father-Daughter Movie. Karen's parents are divorced and she lives with her Mother during the week and with her work-obsessed Father on the weekends.

Karen has no friends at school or on Prom Committee, and she barely has a relationship with her Father... until she confronts him about his unkempt promises throughout her childhood - and him always saying he's sorry, but not changing. From then on, he tries very hard to be there for his daughter, all while he gets back into his old high school band and even gets Karen to sing along as they practice at the house one weekend! They both learn to let loose - just a little. It's sweet to see them become closer.

My only cautions with this movie: there is a bit of drinking - it was adults in social situations and the term "sucks" was used numerous times to refer to something they didn't like. For example, I think Karen asked her father to read her poetry and let her know, if he thought it sucked. Something to that effect. Other than that, it was a fine and decent movie.

Will Karen be asked to the the Prom? Will they find a band for prom, when the one they booked can't make it? Will Karen's Father finally choose her over his work.

Rest assured... It's a satisfying Hallmark ending!

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure... a Disney Channel Original Movie starring High School Musical's Ashley Tisdale

MOVIE REVIEW

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure

Network: Disney Channel

Original Air Date: Sometime in 2011

CAST:

Ashley Tisdale ... Sharpay Evans

More to Come...

PLOT:

from Disney Press Release:

The irrepressible diva Sharpay Evans, recent graduate of East High School, seizes the spotlight in "Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure." The incomparable Ashley Tisdale reprises her role she made so popular in the "High School Musical" TV movies and feature film. Tisdale originated the role of scene-stealing drama queen Sharpay Evans in "High School Musical," followed by its sequel "High School Musical 2,", and feature film, "High School Musical 3 : Senior Year,"

Aspiring thespian Sharpay Evans, who was once a big, fabulous fish in a small pond (a man-made pond at a resort country club that her father owns), is finally about to meet her destiny on Broadway, and luckily, theater lighting highlights her hair and skin tone beautifully. Her big break comes after a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, and now there's not a marquee big enough or lights bright enough to contain the glorious fame she plans on having. Sharpay and Boi head to New York, but theatre is a dog eat dog world, and nothing turns out as Sharpay expects, especially when she meets her match in a rather daunting Broadway starlet (who arrived in Midtown Manhattan as a recent winner of "So You Think You're America's Most Talented Performing Idol").

The Great White Way is all Sharpay's ever dreamed of, especially since she already has everything else. Life in the big city is a shock, but there's an even bigger bombshell when Sharpay finally realizes the Broadway role is really for Boi, not her. Putting her disappointment aside, she sets out to make Boi the most fabulous canine star to hit the stage, with the hope that his fame will become her fame (after all, she is his entourage and she holds the leash). Before long, Sharpay makes a new friend in a student filmmaker, Callem, who finds her to be a fascinating subject. Meanwhile, Boi finds puppy love on a Big Apple adventure of his own.
